FUNCTION OF THE CHAPTERS

CHAPTER 1: to introduce the protagonist, Changez; to set the narrative structure; to offer the reader elements for the comprention of the novel.

 

CHAPTER 2: Changez meets Erica for the first time and falls in love with her.

 

CHAPTER 3: he speaks about his job (Underwood Samson).

 

CHAPTER 4: he meets Erica in New York.

 

CHAPTER 5: Changez works on the Philippines; he listens about the crash of the Twin Towers and he discovers that he feels Pakistani. He starts to change his mentality.

 

CHAPTER  6-9: people suspect Changez of terrorism, therefore he feels discriminated. Erica suffers for Chris’ death and she refuses to see Changez. He goes to Pakistan and when he comes back to America he looks more Pakistani.

 

 CHAPTER 10: he meets Juan-Bautista and he finally decides to be a Pakistani. He leaves his job and when he discovers that Erica probably has killed herself he goes home (to Pakistan).

 

 CHAPTER 11-12: final reflections: if occidentals could suspect every Pakistani of terrorism, Pakistanis could say that every occidental is an assassin.
