The novel is a monologue, the novelist introduces the protagonist Changez . He meet an American, a silent interlocutor, in a tearoom and begins to tell his story to him.

- To introduce Erica whit his point of view;
- Erica is the representation of his ideal woman;
- To show the differences between Islamic’s women and American’s;
- To compare the different way to present himself between a male and a female;
- To put in evidence the differences between social classes, he is poor, the other rich;
- To underline that the Pakistani protagonist is a man like other, even if it is Muslim;

- To put in evidence the American culture and technology;
- The America is cosmopolitan;
- To show economic power and meritocracy;
- To show the American mentality;
- To make a comparison between America and Pakistan economic;
