Chapter one- main functions

  • Introduction of the protagonist;
  • Set the narrative structure;
  • To offer the reader the key to read and understand the novel;
  • To put into evidence the stereotypes between different cultures;

 

The novel is a monologue, the novelist introduces the protagonist Changez . He meet an American, a silent interlocutor, in a tearoom and begins to tell his story to him.

 

Chapter two

  • Function: characterization;
  • To introduce Erica whit his point of view;
  • Erica is the representation of his ideal woman;
  • To show the differences between Islamic’s women and American’s;
  • To compare the different way to present himself between a male and a female;
  • To put in evidence the differences between social classes, he is poor, the other rich;
  • To underline that the Pakistani protagonist is a man like other, even if it is Muslim;

 

Chapter three

  • Function: narrative
  • To put in evidence the American culture and technology;
  • The America is cosmopolitan;
  • To show economic power and meritocracy;
  • To show the American mentality;
  • To make a comparison between America and Pakistan economic;
  • Times ago Pakistan was technologically advanced, but now is backward;
