CHAPTER 1

Function: introduction of the main character, Changez, and background. Changez begins to tell about his life from the time he left Lahore to go to university in America.

CHAPTER 2

Function: introduction of a new character, Erica. Introduction of first hints between two different cultures: American culture and Pakistan culture.

CHAPTER 3

Function: development chapter. Changez progressively adapts to America, he feels like home “I was immediately a New Yorker”.

CHAPTER 4

Function: development of Changez and Erica’s relationship. He meets her parents and he has a discussion with her dad: it shows the prejudices of Americans to Pakistan and Pakistani.

CHAPTER 5

Function: 11 September attack on the World Trade Center. The Twin Towers collapses and he “smiles”. This event changed people’s judgment on foreigners.

CHAPTER 6

Function: the attack to the World Trade Center marks the Americans. Erica feels more depressed because her pain increase.

CHAPTER 7

Function: there are described consequences on Changez and Muslims. Americans treat them in a different way.

CHAPTER 8

Function: consequence of the 11 September on Americans and Changez. Judgment and behaviour of Americans changes behaviour of Changez.

CHAPTER 9

Function: Changez flew back to Pakistan. After returning in the USA, Changez was judged at work because of his beard. He notices differences between his culture and American culture.

CHAPTER 10

Function: Changez went to Chile for work. He met Juan Bautista, who made him think about his job and its consequence. The situation and judgments prevent him from working.

CHAPTER 11

Function: conclusion chapter. The ideas and the fundamentals of the main character are changed.

CHAPTER 12

Function: conclusion chapter. It shows how an event can change American’s point of view about foreigners. It demonstrates how Changez changes himself due to the American judgment and treatment because he assumes new fundamentals.
