CHAPTER 7

The main functions of Chapter seven are:

- Destruction of his American dream;

- Discrimination;

- American aggressive;

- Economic problems;

- Meritocracy;

- Comparison between America and Pakistan (forms of respect and food);

- Fundamentalism in economy;

- Changez is changing;

- Prejudices;

- The protagonist lost his personality, he was humiliated.

 

Changez seems interested about his country; he took distances from New York and America. He talks about economic problems of Lahore and his problems after the Twin Towers attack.

The sentence “Focus on the fundamentals” is very important because it is the ground of this novel. Fundamentalism is seen not only in a religion sphere, but also in an economical one. 

The war in Afghanistan is important for Changez, because it is linked to Pakistan.  Changez approaches himself to his origins and he becomes proud talking about the past, when Pakistan was more developed than America.

 CHAPTER 8

The main functions of Chapter eight are:

- Erica’s decline;

- America’s decline;

- America and Erica’s nostalgia;

- Discrimination;

- The protagonist’s new point of view, not American;

- Pakistani problems.

 

Erica and America are in decline, both took by nostalgia. Changez takes distances from them.

Discrimination is explained by Changez. He talks with the interlocutor and this creates a direct confrontation between the narrator and the reader.

 CHAPTER 9

The main functions of Chapter nine:

- The comparison between America and Pakistan;

- To show the shame felt by Changez for Pakistani problems;

- To show the beard as a symbol of his new identity linked to Pakistan.

 

Changez is changed and one of the aspects of his new character is the beard. Beard is used as a symbolism; it represents the protagonist’s identity. He returns to Lahore and to his origins, but he maintains the distance and an objective view of life.
