“IL FUOCO CHE PRODUCE LUCE E FUMO” (GIUSEPPE CONTE)
Ricordiamoci dell'11 settembre
il fuoco fulmineo alle Torri Gemelle
la nebulosa orrenda di carburante e carne,
di sangue e di materia cerebrale
come si è fatta subito fumo grigio, mortale,
che si espandeva e cancellava,
fumo d'odio e di buio, apoteosi
della polvere, della calce che ricoprivano
volti d'uomini, vie, automobili
come se avessero preso dominio gli Inferi. [...]
Ricordiamoci dell'11 settembre
preghiamo ognuno con le nostre preghiere
qualunque nome abbia il nostro Dio -
che non sia mai un Dio assassino
che ci sorrida bambino.
ANALYSIS
“Il fuoco che produce luce e fumo” is a poem written by the italian poet Giuseppe Conte in 2001.
The intelligent reader when reads the title understands that the poet wants to emphasize the horror caused by the tragedy of Semptember 11th.
The poem is organized into two sections. In the first line and in the line number 11 there is the repetition of the word “Ricordiamoci”. The poet makes the reader understood that you have to remember the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York
In the first lines the poet invites the reader to not forget, to remember the image of the two towers falling and the following cloud of smoke emphasizing the effect of the massacre.
Giuseppe Conte wants to underline the horror of the massacre and the absurdity of those religious causes.
In the line 11 the poet invites the reader to pray; this means that religion principles should not become a cause to justify the horrors. This is a multicultural aspects, religion should unite, not divide.
In the first section there is metrical regularity; in the following lines the uniformity is divided, the hendecasyllable is confused in the chaos. This indicates the chaos of the tragedy. In the 4th line the hendecasyllable "di sangue e di materia celebrale" describes the
gray cloud of material that is created after the attack.
The image is also reinforced by the only rhyme of the verse “celebrale-mortale”.
In the last two lines the rhyme is between “assassino-bambino”.
It follows that Giuseppe Conte tries to hold the massacre in a traditional syntactic form.
The poem ends with a note of hope.
DESIDERIO DI PACE (Mario Luzi)
Si sono mescolati
in quella frenesia di morte
dell’estremo affronto i sangui,
l’arabo, l’ebreo,
il cristiano, l’indio.
E ora vi richiamerà
qualcuno ai vostri fasti.
Risorgete, risorgete,
non più torri, ma steli,
gigli di preghiera.
Avvenga per desiderio
di pace. Di pace vera.
