3rd CHAPTER
1)Main function of the chapter:
-introduction of Changez life in New York;
-his job in Underwood Sampson;
-introduction of the characteristics of Jim and Wainwright.
2)Structural elements of the novel:
The novelist starts the 3rd chapter with a comparison between the two cities: Lahore and New York. The two cities are equally crowded; indeed it was a bit like “coming home” for Changez; he felt immediately a New Yorker. Moreover, Changez compares the advanced civilisation and technology on New York, to the poorness of Pakistan. Even if Changez comes to a different country, by his self he was able to obtain the job, and he could feel proud of his self. In addition, he has got the first rankings at the end of the training programme. Underwood Samson was a meritocracy and had young ‘guns’ trained and working for it- teams trained by Sherman in the arts of economic fundamentalism-how to make as much money as possible and as quickly and directly as possible. Makes friends with Wainwright-another outsider. Changez and Wainwright try to speak the’ lingo’ of the dominant culture.
