Othello is the protagonist of the William Shakespeare’s namesake play , composed in 1604. Othello is a soldier in love with Desdemona, the daughter Brabantio , a Venetian Senator. The ensign Iago nourishes deep hatred against Othello, as he promoted his lieutenant Cassio instead him. Iago, due to envy and revenge makes Othello believe that Cassio and Desdemona are lovers. Iago has the task of driving Othello crazy for jealousy, the main theme of the tragedy, although he himself tells Othello to beware of jealousy, the “green-eyed monster which doth mock”. Jealousy victim is Desdemona. She is smothered by Othello in her sleep because it was deemed unfaithful. As a matter of fact, the woman harbored true and profound feelings for her husband and when Othello himself realizes her innocence and his sick love kills himself becoming in turn a victim of his own jealousy. A possible message that you can grasp the tragedy is not to trust the words of other people if you do not have the evidence. Jealousy is based on the distorted and pretend idea that Iago transmits to Othello. If he had looked for evidence in reality he would not have killed his wife, let alone himself. Anyway if the story had a happy ending it wouldn’t have been a tragedy.
