Rosso Malpelo is a story written by Giovanni Verga. It is part of Vita dei Campi.
The novel narrates the story of a young man who has always worked in a mine. He names Malpelo and agrees to explore a gallery in what is called a dangerous mission that no one else wanted to do. He do this because his father and his best friend are death and he feels abandoned by his mother.
Malpelo is the only one to want to work in the dangerous gallery, the others do not want to or because they were fathers , or sons ; unlike malpelo that is alone.
The extract is based on a narrative scene, which focuses on the protagonist’s death. The novel is writes in third person; he is omniscent.
The narrator refers to Malpelo’s fate with the word "ossa". His death is connoted in a material way. His fate is in relationship with his father's fate, they both die in the cave. Malpelo seems to be perfectly aware of his imminent death and his action seems to express his will to be less alone. The difference between Malpelo's death and his father's death is that Malpelo’s body was never found. Malpelo's death is characterized by a disappearance, this marks Malpelo’s exclusion and solitude.
Verga’s story is close to Dickens’ novel as for the interest and attention towards the living condition of children in their own countries.
