Right from the first act of “Othello”, Iago veils his intentions playing with the use of words. The first scene opens with a discussion between Iago and Roderigo, in which the reader can understand that Iago is trying to convince Roderigo about the negative qualities of Othello. Iago wants to involve Roderigo into his plan and he immediately shows his disgust towards Othello. After a careful reading of the first act, the reader is able to understand that Roderigo is in love with Desdemona, indeed he hates Othello too. Iago tells Roderigo about Othello playing irony, thanks to which he can make fun about Othello and his relationship with Desdemona. Iago proves to be smart manipulating people’s mind thanks the use of words and prevailing upon them to believe in appearance; for example he is able to persuade Brabantio about Othello’s bad intentions towards her daughter. Afterwards he goes to Othello telling him that Roderigo has told Brabantio about his secret marriage with Desdemona. Iago is presented as a false person who feigns to be a good person while he is the creator of the revenge.
