        The Victorian Age is a period that covered most of the ninetheenth century. In this period you can identify a series of phenomena and events that radically changed the mentality, therefore they radically change economy, society, culture and last but not least litrerature.

        Between such phenomena of the Victorian Age you can single out ten main aspects that makes idea about the period of Queen Victoria's reign. The four main aspects, that are inherited from the past, are:

  1. The power of British nation. England had been a powerful nation since the seventeenth century.
  2. Also thanks to its numerous colonies the British nation could boast of a vast empire.
  3. Certainly even the Industrial Revolution with its technological innovation began a few decades earlier and it was developing during the Victorian Age.
  4. As last the Protestantism that was the most widespread faith in British nation and its empire.

        On the other hand the other aspects of the Victorian Age were typical phenomena of its. You can find out:

  1. The new reign of Queen Victoria who was the charismatic character of English history.
  2. The figure of Queen Victoria gave rise to a "cultural moviment" represented by the "Victorians".
  3. Queen Victoria and Victorians' compromise was a particular aspect of this period. It consisted of a sort of dualism in attitudes and politics. Compromise is necessary to broaden the consensus both in politics and in society, but especially to be able to better manage their own interests.
  4. Industrial Revolution is at the top and the natural and evident consiquence is the growth of popolation.
  5. But the population grew up too much, the prodiction was not sufficient to meet the entire British population therefore there was an increase of poverty, in addition it was increased by inhuman conditions of work in nighteenth century. It was already present but during the Victorian Age it was increasing considerably that Victorian Age's people started to talk about poverty and slums, also through literature.
  6. Civilization was refered to two aspects: civilization link to urbanization and civilization link to the idea of improvement of awarness in front of English State and in front of individual rights and duties.
