Mr.Bounderby is a character from the novel 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens.
Banker, merchant and very rich man, he is the typical utilitarian character of the Victorian Age. Mr.Bounderby tells us of being born in a ditch, and have spent here his tenth birthday. His whole story is focused on the description of his childhood, spent in dire poverty (he tells his interlocutor that he was the poorest child in his village).
But, in conclusion, says that through its commitment and desire to work, he has become very rich. This story coincides with the capitalist and puritan vision of the economy, fundamental in the Victorian society.
Dickens constantly uses hyperbole and exaggerations, doing not be very credible story of Mr.Bounderby. A clear critique of the society of the time.
