 Mr.Bounderby

This extract, is take from Hard Times by Charles Dickens, is the presentation of one

character: Mr. Bounderby. He is a rich man, to more precise a capitalist. In this chapter there is a dialogue between the protagonist (Mr. Bounderby) and a lady: Mrs. Grundy. She is a pathetic and stupid woman, and Mr.Bounderby is attracted by she.

He tells her the story of his life, when he was young.

The novelist uses pathos to create interest in the protagonist's situation, indeed he is a pathetic victim.

An intelligent reader apprehend that the all representation is a caricature, because all is exaggeration.

Mr. Bounderby was able to grow his social position. Indeed he symbolizes the victory of the Puritan novel, where money success is the demonstration of God's

grace. Indeed the is used as the expression of the moral puritan

obligation felt by Middle classes.
