CPolidori - The Figure of Friday
[author: Chiara Polidori - postdate: 2007-10-03]

Text:  Foe by J.M.Coetzee and Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
Task: Possible connections between the two novels.

The First Image of Friday

Robinson Crusoe and Susan Barton meet twice with Friday.
Robinson Crusoe sees Friday who fights for surviving when he lands on the island. You can note that Robinson is friendly with Friday: he tries to help and  protect him and he smiles but he immediately understands that Friday may be his servant for good.

Susan Barton  has got a different meetings with Friday. In fact when she lands on the island, she sees a "black man" who helps her. In the beginning she thinks that he is a shadows (maybe because he is black) and she asks him for help.
The differences are:
- In  Robinson Crusoe  the meeting is described in the 14th chapter, while in Foe it is set in the 1st chapter.
- In  Robinson Crusoe   the main character (Robinson) helps Friday, in Foe  Friday helps the main character(Susan).
- In  Robinson Crusoe   there is the vision of Friday as  a servant, while in Foe Susan Barton doesn't think about this.
- In  Robinson Crusoe  Friday's description is conveyed by psychological aspects, while in "Foe" it consists of the attention of physical aspects.
