NZentilin - The Final Voyage
[author: Nicol? Zentilin - postdate: 2007-12-01]

Text: The Final Voyage
Task: Summary

Charles Coghlan was born in 1841 to a poor Irish family in Canada. Charles went to England to study: his parents were pround when he left them to study.Charles said to his parents that he wanted to be an actor but they got angry and they didn't want to.

Charles promised that he would never return there. He was a talented actor and became very famous. He visited a fortune teller who made a shocking prediction: he would die suddenly at the peak of his popularity. She told him that this would happen in a city in the southern United States, but his body would never rest until it returned home to Prince Edwar Island.

In the summer of 1898 Charles was playing Hamlet in Galvestrong,Texas. He was only fifty-seven years old when he died on stage at the peak of his career. He was buried in a lead-lined coffin on Galvestrong Island.

In 1900 a hurricane hit Galvestrong. Six thousand people died and the cemetery where Coghlan was buried was washed.

Eight years later,a fisherman of Prince Edwar Island saw something unusual in the cold Atlantic waters. They thought it was a box but when they managed to pull it onboard, he identified the body as Charles Coghlan. His body had travelled three thousand miles in ten years.

The fortune teller' s prediction had come true. Charles was buried in the cemetery next to the church where he had been baptized in 1841.
