Cancellieri Lorenzo's Tradition and Individual Talent
[author: Lorenzo Cancellieri - postdate: 2008-01-06]
Eliot’s idea is that every form of art is a re-elaboration of past works. This idea is supported with historical examples like the history of literature in Europe after Homer. Eliot doesn’t ever evaluate an artist without taking in consideration many factors like his movement, the historical present where he lives, his ancestors and many others. In this more open vision carried by T.S. Eliot, present and past have an influence on each other.

The text can be subdivided into three sections:

in the first one the poet analyzes the relationships existing between a poet and its predecessors.

In the second one Eliot explains the meaning of the word "tradition", what it means in the present and meant in the past.

in the last part the writer analyzes the way in which present works alter past ones and vice versa as well as the the new order they create in the total amount of works.

I do agree with Eliot’s vision, but I can tell you more: in music there is a law against the plagium (the copyright) but there is a certain tolerance in some cases of unwilling plagium, since we are shaped by something and sometimes is difficult to understand until which point.
